The origins of Ospedale Maggiore hospital, also known as the Policlinico di Milano, date all the way back to 1456 and involve Duke Francesco Sforza. Therefore we are of course talking about the oldest and most prestigious hospital in the city, which is found just a short walk from our hotel!
The Magna Domus Hospitalis (better known as Ca’ Granda) was an imposing structure dedicated to the town of Annunciata, built at the Duke’s behest in order to curry favour with the people. Little by little, after gradual expansions, the hospital moved across the canal and the old buildings of the Ca’ Granda were given to the new State University (important art collections are held here, which can still be visited today).
Ospedale Maggiore then became the Policlinico Universitario, located in a vast area that spanned Via Francesco Sforza, Corso di Porta Romana and Via Lamarmora.
