Take a tour around the artistic beauty spots of Milan, near Hotel Canada

A city like Milan offers an impressive artistic and cultural heritage starting from the old town centre in which the Hotel Canada is located, a practical and elegant reference point for those who visit the Lombard chief town to admire its architectural beauty spots.

The Hotel Canada is near the Cathedral, a perfect place from which to start off on a journey to discover the history that surrounds Milan. The Cathedral is definitely the building that best represents the city throughout the world, a magnificent construction with spires and pinnacles that shoot into the sky and, surmounted by the Madonnina that seems to protect the city from above.

The Piazza Duomo is connected to Piazza della Scala by means of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a typical 19th century construction in which the windows of the shops selling prestigious brands and names, that make this gallery one of the luxury shopping centres of the city, shine amidst the caryatids, lunettes and pilasters. There is also an admirable central octagon that represents the city’s “parlour” and is covered by a marvellous dome and boasts a mosaic paving depicting beautiful coats of arms.

The La Scala Opera house is renowned throughout the world as the sanctuary of opera, a temple that has been perfectly reconstructed after the second world war seriously damaged it. Enchanting works of classical music such as those of Verdi, Rossini and Toscanini as well as great artists like Pavarotti, Callas and Domingo have witnessed to the excellence of their art here.

If one wants to continue the cultural tour of Milan, a visit to the Sforzesco Castle is a must. It is a gigantic fortress constructed by Galeazzo II Visconti from which the Filerete Tower stands out with its clock. The Trivulziana Library is located inside the castle and preserves the famous Da Vinci Code.

The Basilica of S. Ambrogio, dedicated to the patron saint of the city, stands out from other religious buildings. It is a Romanesque church that has a gorgeous outer structure consisting in porches, arches and 2 bell towers on the sides, that encloses a marvellous alter engraved using the Carolingian goldsmith art and the ciborium with its balcony that is unique in its kind.

These, and many others, are the artistic beauties of Milan, including its monuments and its museums, its squares and its attractions. One day is definitely not long enough to visit them all because the city is full of historical buildings, and of events that make the most of them, each of which deserves a specific visit.
